Blood Orange Brulée Old Fashioned Cocktail Recipe

This cocktail was one of our go-to, at-home cocktails that made us feel like we were out on the town back when restaurants & bars weren’t open. In fact, it inspired our very first Instagram Reels video! We realized that we never shared the recipe on our blog, so here it is! With it still being winter, we think everyone will benefit from a fun cocktail with an added element of warm, toasted sugar.

We typically go for Bulleit Bourbon because it’s well-priced & has a great taste, but we decided to go up one notch & choose Woodford Reserve this time around. Whatever type of bourbon you choose, we hope you enjoy this cocktail!

BLOOD ORANGE Brûlée OLD FASHIONED

Prep time: 2-5 minutes
Servings: 1 cocktail

Ingredients
1.5 shots bourbon
2 tablespoons simple syrup
2 tablespoons water
2 splashes of bitters (Angostura aromatic or orange bitters preferred)
1 slice of blood orange or tangerine
1 pinch of sugar

Tools
Butane torch (we use this one & it works really well!)
Cocktail stirrer (or spoon/fork/knife/whatever you have)

Instructions
Add simple syrup, water & bitters to an empty cocktail glass & stir.
Add pinch of sugar to slice of blood orange or tangerine, and use a butane torch to caramelize & brûlée the sugar. You’ll know to stop when it gets a little brown – think the shell of crème brûlée!
Place large cube or spherical ice cube carefully into cocktail glass. We love these ice cube molds!
Place the tangerine or blood orange slice on top of the ice cube.
Pour bourbon over the top of the caramelized blood orange or tangerine.
Enjoy!!

We love how pouring the bourbon in last over the caramelized sugar helps give even the first sip a sweet, fruit-infused taste. We hope you try out this cocktail & let us know what you think! Be sure to head over to our Instagram to watch us make this Tangerine Brûlée Old Fashioned.

If you’re looking for something to do while sipping your Blood Orange Brûlée Old Fashioned, we recommend mentally whisking yourself away to Lake Como, sprucing up your closet or home with some of our favorite finds, or listening to Kelcy’s dinner party playlist, which we’ve had on repeat lately.

Cheers!!
