Celebrating Mom's Birthday in Arizona
Thanks to mom, we enjoyed Bloody Marys en route to Phoenix with her Southwest Airlines drink coupons and landed around lunch time. We went straight to "Old Los" (known to most people as Los Compadres), which mom has been going to since high school and we've been visiting since we were babies. We chatted with the owner for a bit before sitting at our usual table & were surprised that he bought our lunch – a great welcome home! There happened to be a street fair – Melrose on 7th Avenue Street Fair & Chester's Classic Car Show – next to the restaurant on the same day we visited, so we walked around after lunch looking at cool, classic cars & listening to music. We wish we had pictures to share, but we were so full from lunch that we could barely think about anything else but putting one foot in front of the other!
Afterwards, we went to The Red Door Salon & Spa at the Biltmore Fashion Park for Swedish & Signature massages, which were amazing as usual. It's not often we rave about massages for hours after the fact, but we couldn't stop talking about them! After showering & getting ready back at home, we met our best friend Paige in Gilbert at her farmhouse that she's renovating with her husband – with Kelcy's help! We all met Taylor for a late dinner at Postino, where we always get our favorite wine & bruschetta board combo, to catch up on life. The next morning, we ventured to O.H.S.O. – a fun, dog-friendly brewery with an awesome back patio and an amazing brunch deal: $10 for a delicious entrée and hefty mimosa or beer.
After brunch, we headed back home to relax with mom before enjoying dinner at one of our favorite hangouts: The Henry. We split warm kale & truffle dip, white truffle parmesan fries, and heirloom quinoa tacos along with a variety of homemade drinks – chai lime ginger beer, pineapple passion fruit soda, and hand-shaken mixed berry lemonade – and mom's birthday dessert: chocolate peanut butter molten cake with banana gelato. After dinner, we went home, ate a tub of Baskin Robbins chocolate-chip ice cream, and watched Eat Pray Love.
The next morning, we got ready and headed to lunch with mom and our Aunt Patty at a new place called The Orchard, which has a beautiful grassy area where they have live music on weekends, Luci's – a healthy marketplace, cafe, coffee & juice bar, and vintage ice cream shop, and Pomelo – where we ate on the sunny patio. Each day they have different deals from open to close (which is unheard of in LA!), but since we were there on a Monday afternoon, we split a delicious pizza and a bottle of pinot noir for only $20.
After lunch, we went to Butterfly Wonderland in Scottsdale, which we've heard awesome things about. It's the largest indoor butterfly pavilion in America & thousands of butterflies fly around and land on you – they loved mom & B! Since we were already in Scottsdale, we stopped at our favorite mall, Scottsdale Fashion Square, which has changed so much since we last visited, and then had dinner at one of our beloved Indian restaurants, Jewel of the Crown.
For our last morning together before flying back to LA, we went to Snooze for chai tea lattes & a great late breakfast. We caught up on our favorite parts of the trip, reminisced about past vacations, and started planning the next one!
